Gifts in Wills are essential for us to maintain the exceptional quality of care we provide for our patients and their families. They enable us to continue to improve the services and facilities here at the Hospice for the benefit of people across the Barnsley area.
Any gift large or small, or just 1% of an estate, makes a difference and is a wonderful way to help others.
It could be:
- £50 or £50,000
- A piece of jewellery
- An antique
- A gift of shares
We promise to use your gift carefully and cost effectively so that it has the greatest impact on the care we provide for future patients and their loved ones.
Why make a Will?
Despite it not being a subject we often talk about, there are many good reasons why you should make a Will. It gives you peace of mind knowing that you have provided for your family and friends and that your wishes will be carried out.
Of course, the interests of those close to you come first but once you have provided for them, please consider leaving a gift to Barnsley Hospice if you are able.
You may already have a Will in place but wish Barnsley Hospice to benefit in some way; this can easily be added with a codicil. A codicil is a way of making a change or addition to your existing Will without having to redraft the Will completely. Your solicitor will be able to advise on this.
How to remember the Hospice in your Will
There are a number of ways you might decide to support the Hospice.
- A gift of money, you can leave a specific amount to us which is known as a 'pecuniary gift'.
- A share of your estate, this is a gift of what is left of your estate (or part of) after all debts, taxes, costs and other bequests. It can be a percentage or fraction of your estate and is known as a 'residuary gift'.
- A gift of a particular item, eg. jewellery, a painting or antique, known as a 'specific gift'.
Just tell your solicitor who will ensure that your wishes are included using the correct legal wording.

"I started fundraising for Barnsley Hospice from its first inception and to help with its initial construction for opening in 1994. I have continued to do so ever since because of the tremendous support that the charity provides to local people at a most difficult time, and in particular to enable the on-going provision of the warm reassurance and understanding so readily given to patients and their loved ones.
It therefore feels appropriate that a gift to the Hospice in my Will would be a final goodwill gesture which would help continue the vital, compassionate service for future generations of Barnsley people."
