Dan Jarvis

Dan Jarvis MBE, Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central became a Patron for Barnsley Hospice in April 2023.

Dan Jarvis is a former Major in The Parachute Regiment and entered Parliament as the Member for Barnsley Central in March 2011 at a by-election. He was also elected as the first Mayor of the Sheffield City Region in May 2018 and served for four years as the first South Yorkshire Regional Mayor. He currently serves as Shadow Minister for Security, in the Home Office.

Throughout his time in Parliament Dan has led numerous campaigns, from increasing the National Minimum Wage to bringing forward policies to eradicate the scourge of child poverty. He has also, quite rarely for an opposition MP, changed the law twice with two separate Private Member’s Bills. The first, on organ donation, increases the number of potential donors through the introduction of an opt-out system of donation. This will undoubtedly save countless lives and give hope to many awaiting transplants. Secondly, and more recently, Dan brought forward a Bill which will extend redundancy protection to include pregnant women as well as new parents returning to work after a relevant form of leave.

In his (limited!) spare time, Dan enjoys running, writing, hill walking and supporting Barnsley FC – all of which can be hard work at times! In 2023, Dan ran the London Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research UK for the tenth time. Dan has also done the marathon to raise vital funds for the tremendous work of the hospice.

In 2020 Dan published his memoir, Long Way Home. He lives in Barnsley with his wife, three children and their dog, Juno – an energetic Springer Spaniel!

“Barnsley Hospice holds a very special place in my heart and the hearts of many across our Town. The hospice provides incredible, specialist support and care to individuals and families during the most challenging times of their lives. I was proud to be asked to become a patron and I look forward to working alongside Dame Hilary and of course, the inspirational and indefatigable staff and volunteers, to whom we all owe so much.”
