Grant funds new bariatric bed at Barnsley Hospice
18 May 2026
Barnsley Hospice is set to provide more comfort and support to patients living with a life-limiting illness, thanks to a grant of £9,950 from the Hospital Saturday Fund.
The funding will enable the Gawber-based hospice to purchase a new bariatric bed for its Inpatient Unit (IPU). The bed can also be used as a ‘cuddle bed’, offering patients the chance to be physically close to loved ones.
The Hospital Saturday Fund supports all kinds of medically associated charities throughout the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and Malta each year. Its latest grant will support Barnsley Hospice’s ongoing commitment to providing specialist palliative and end of life care to local people.
Standard hospital beds are unsafe for bariatric patients who have a high body mass index (BMI) or larger than average body measurements. In the past, the hospice has had to borrow bariatric equipment on a short-term basis to meet the needs of these patients. Thanks to this funding, the hospice will have its own bariatric bed meaning fewer patients will have to wait before being admitted for hospice care.
Charlie Straw, Grants and Major Donor Manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Hospital Saturday Fund for their support. Over recent years they have invested generously in our hospice, improving care for our patients and their families.”
A spokesperson from the Hospital Saturday Fund, added: “The Hospital Saturday Fund is proud to support Barnsley Hospice with a £9,950 grant to fund a cuddle bed, helping prevent delays in admitting bariatric patients while enabling families to share meaningful moments of comfort, closeness, and dignity together.” Visit our services page to find out more.
