Decarbonising Hospice Care – Solar Panels Installed

21 May 2026

Barnsley Hospice is proud to confirm the installation of solar panels have been installed on the Barnsley Hospice roof in our bid to decarbonise hospice care.

Funded by a grant from npower Business Solutions Foundation, the new solar panels will help to reduce the hospice’s CO2 emissions whilst also reducing energy bills.

As a charity, we are proud to deliver outstanding care to the people of Barnsley and their loved ones and raising funds is essential to provide this care.

The main hospice building currently uses 153,588 kwh of electricity per year – equivalent to the electricity consumption of 57 typical households.

Amy Lau, Head of Estates and Facilities, said: “Providing 24-hour care 365 days a year comes at significant cost in terms of our energy consumption. We have rooms to light and keep warm, and we cater for our patients and those close to them which also uses considerable energy. By installing these solar panels, they will not only reduce our bills but also our carbon footprint. We are incredibly grateful to npower Business Solutions Foundation for this grant as look to lessen our environmental impact.

“It is expected that the solar panels will save 9,508 kg of CO2 per year which is the equivalent of the CO2 absorbed by 436 trees or a car ride of 33,955 miles.”

Thanks to the support of our community, businesses, trusts and foundations, we are able to be there when it matters most and would like to thank npower Business Solutions Foundation for this grant which will enable us to deliver outstanding care whilst being environmentally conscious.
