Let us take your Christmas tree off your hands this January – while helping to support Barnsley Hospice.
A real Christmas tree looks brilliant throughout December. Getting rid of it in January? Not quite as festive.
With our Treecycle service, there’s no need to squeeze your tree into the car or make a trip to the tip. Simply register your tree, leave it ready for collection and our fantastic team of volunteers and corporate supporters will do the rest.
In return for a donation to Barnsley Hospice, we’ll collect your real Christmas tree from your home and make sure it is recycled responsibly. The trees are chipped, with the chippings then mixed with soil and reused for horticultural purposes.
Every tree collected helps fund the specialist care and support we provide for people across Barnsley, as well as their families and loved ones. And by recycling your tree responsibly, it gets a second life too – helping the planet thrive long after Christmas is over.
With the support of local businesses, our Treecycle service collects hundreds of real Christmas trees from across the Barnsley area every year. For 2027, we’re pleased to be expanding our collection area to include S35 for the first time, alongside S36, S63, S70, S71, S72, S73, S74 and S75.

How does Treecycle work?
Taking part in our Treecycle service is really easy, just follow these four easy steps below and we’ll take care of the rest!
Step 1: Book your collection
Register your real Christmas tree online and make your donation to Barnsley Hospice. Once your booking is complete, you’ll receive a confirmation email. If you can’t see it, please check your spam or junk folder.
Step 2: Enjoy Christmas and forget about it!
Don’t worry about remembering your collection date. If you’ve provided an email address, we’ll send you a reminder ahead of your collection – so you can book now and leave the rest to us.
Step 3: Get your tree ready and we’ll do the rest
Remove all decorations, lights, stands and pots, then leave your tree(s) outside your property in a clearly visible and accessible place the night before collection, Saturday 9 January 2027. Just like Santa himself, our Treecycle partners start early in the morning – so you may not even see them arrive! That’s why it’s really important to have your tree outside and ready the night before.

How does it work?
Our Treecycle service is really simple:
- Register your tree online and make your donation to Barnsley Hospice.
- Remove all decorations, lights, stands and pots from your tree.
- Leave your tree in the agreed collection location on Saturday 9 January 2027.
- Our Treecycle team will collect it for recycling.
You don’t need to be at home when we collect your tree, as long as it is clearly visible and accessible from the location provided during registration.
How much do I donate?
We suggest a minimum of £15 per tree, which helps us to continue providing specialist care and support for local people. However, you may donate an additional amount if you wish, which makes a huge difference to us. All donations received are voluntary in nature and not payment for services.
What time is my collection?
Our teams will be out collecting trees throughout Sunday 10 January 2027.
Please make sure your tree is ready and in its agreed collection location on the evening of Saturday 9 January 2027.
Due to the number of trees being collected and the different routes our volunteers will be travelling, your tree may be collected at any point during the day.
What happens if my tree isn’t collected?
This is a common question we’re asked, but please be reassured that in previous years we have been very successful in collecting all registered trees as part of our Treecycle service.
On rare occasions, circumstances outside of our control (such as weather, vehicle issues or unexpected changes to collection routes) may mean we’re unable to collect your tree as planned on Sunday 10 January 2027.
If this happens, please leave your tree in its collection location. One of our Treecycle partners may still collect it later that day. If not, a member of the Barnsley Hospice team will contact you by email or telephone to arrange another collection within the following week.

Who will collect my tree?
Treecycle is made possible thanks to the brilliant support of local businesses, volunteers and organisations who give their time, vehicles and resources to help us collect hundreds of trees across the Barnsley area.
You may therefore see one of our Treecycle partner vehicles arriving to collect your tree on behalf of Barnsley Hospice.
Where should I leave my tree?
Please leave your tree somewhere that is:
- Clearly visible from the road
- Easy and safe for our collection team to access
- Within the boundary of the address provided when registering
Please do not leave your tree somewhere that could block a pavement, road or access point.
