Fancy calling yourself a half-marathon finisher? The Great North Run is a world-famous half-marathon and a staple in the running calendar for over 40 years. With over 60,000 runners taking part each year, it’s known for its incredible atmosphere, on-route entertainment and northern charm.
The 13.1 mile course stretches from Newcastle, over the River Tyne, past Gateshead Stadium, through South Tyneside and finishing on the stunning coast of South Shields.
Whether you’re a keen runner or want to take on a new challenge for 2024, completing the run is a huge achievement and each pound you raise from it will support the hospice.
We need to raise £3.5 million each year to continue our services, and it’s because of our incredible supporters who take on challenges like the Great North Run that we can achieve this total.
The 2024 Great North Run will take place on Sunday 8 September.
What’s included in the challenge?
Your registration fee and part of the sponsorship raised will cover:
- Great North Run Finisher medal and T-shirt
- An orange Barnsley Hospice shirt to wear during your run
- Exclusive discounts for 12 months after your Great North Run
- A Hospice Hero medal for completing the run
- Support from our fantastic fundraising team to meet your sponsorship target
From signing up until the day of the run, our fundraiser Vicky is here to support you and offer any advice on the challenge or raising the needed sponsorship.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I need to raise?
All runners must pay a £50 registration fee to secure their space. To cover the cost of your place also, participants need to raise a minimum of £385 sponsorship. If you’re able to raise even more than this, fantastic! You’ll have a huge impact on the work we do here at the hospice and be helping local people when they need it most.
Can I do it with friends or family?
Of course, it’s great to have support in challenges like these. If you are running as part of a team, you’ll each need to sign up and pay your registration fees separately. Due to the popularity of this event, we can’t guarantee that everyone on your team will get a space. Because of this, we’d recommend signing up as soon as possible as spots are limited.
How do I raise the sponsorship?
Raising the sponsorship is up to you, but remember our team is here to help you wherever they can. Our event lead Vicky has supported many of our previous Great North Runners and can provide advice on how to reach your sponsorship goal.
Do you provide transport to the race?
We do not provide transport to or from the race start/finish. All participants will need to make arrangements to the start line in Newcastle and from the finish line in South Shields.
What happens if I get injured and can’t run?
If you are unable to take part on race day, you will be given the option to defer your place to the following year. If you have any questions about this, please contact vicky.stead@barnsley-hospice.org
If you have any questions about this year’s Great North Run or raising sponsorship, drop our fundraiser Vicky an email at vicky.stead@barnsley-hospice.org.
