Trustees’ Week 2025

During November (3 – 7), we are celebrating Trustees’ Week 2025.

The week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and thank trustees, of which there are almost 1,000,000 in the country, for their dedication and voluntary service.

Trustees are a voluntary role that are absolutely essential to the function of Barnsley Hospice. At Barnsley Hospice, we have eight trustees and a Chair of the Board who meet regularly to monitor the hospice’s progress and strategic decision-making, ensuring the best interests of the organisation and those it serves are always at heart.

Each trustee commits approximately two days per month to the hospice, which can include Board meetings and sub-committee meetings. However, there are occasions where matters arise that may need attention from the board outside of the normal board cycle. Additionally, there are opportunities to promote and support the hospice’s events and activities each year.

This week, we are introducing several of our trustees with a light-hearted feature ‘Tea with the Trustees’ as we get to know our Board and what their ideal hot drink and sweet treat combination is!

Head over to our social media channels as we celebrate the dedication of our fabulous trustees.

What is the role of a Trustee?

Trustees are volunteers who are vital to the running of the charity. Alongside other Trustees, you will help to shape the future strategy of the hospice as well as make sure that it is meeting its charitable objectives and is run sustainably. Trustees do this by calling on their significant experience within their areas of expertise.

You can find out more about the role of a Trustee via the drop-down questions below.

Do Trustees get paid?

No. Trustees are volunteers who are vital to the running of the charity.

What is the time commitment for a Trustee?

The estimated time commitment total is approx. 2 days/month. Barnsley Hospice has a quarterly reporting cycle. Each quarter, Trustees attend one sub-committee meeting and one full board meeting (meetings start at 4.30pm or 5pm). In addition, we hold up to 4 board development sessions per year, at similar timings to other meetings. Occasionally, matters arise that need attention outside of the normal board cycle. These are predominantly managed by email. In addition to this, there are opportunities to promote and support the hospice at events across the year.

Do you need prior experience as a Trustee?

No, experience is not required. We are looking for people who are passionate about their local community, recognise the value that Barnsley Hospice brings and want to use their experience, knowledge and skills to further the work of the hospice.

We are particularly keen to achieve a more diverse Board of Trustees, and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
