Barnsley Hospice is encouraging the local community to give us a hand by shopping sustainably and donating to our Retail Hub as part of ‘Second Hand September’.
The campaign, devised by Oxfam, runs through the month of September, promoting sustainable shopping which has a positive impact on the environment and planet.
At our Retail Hub, based in Dodworth, donations and purchases not only help the environment, but raise vital funds for our end of life and palliative care services accessed by those living in the community.
With two-thirds of our running costs being funded by the generosity of the public, the Retail Hub plays a big part in helping generate important revenue.
Julia Bowness, Head of Business Development at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Second Hand September is a great excuse to have a wardrobe clear-out and donate items to Barnsley Hospice’s Retail Hub. We’d be really grateful to receive preloved clothes and good quality items as every purchase and donation means the hospice can be there for the people of Barnsley and their loved ones.
“At our Retail Hub, we are incredibly passionate about reducing the negative impact of waste on the environment and we recycle clothing and furniture that are not suitable to be re-sold.
“Just because some of our items are second hand, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality or style. We have a range of fantastic pre-loved items, furniture and vintage fashion that attracts people from all across the country. We’d be grateful to receive the support of the Barnsley public this Second Hand September, receiving donations and purchasing from us helps Barnsley Hospice be there for those who need us most.”

How can I ‘give a hand’ this Second Hand September?
We really appreciate donations of menswear, ladieswear, children’s clothes, toys, books and bric-a-brac. As well as larger items like furniture and working electricals. For furniture items, please call ahead on (01226 240908) so we can confirm whether we are able to take your donation. You can, of course, shop at our Retail Hub, too!
Where can I donate items?
You can donate at the Retail Hub in Dodworth Monday – Friday, 9 am to 4 pm.
During September, our Retail Hub van will be collecting donations from Wynsors World of Shoes on Doncaster Road every Friday, 10 am to 3 pm.
Countrywide Healthcare in Grimethorpe also accept clothing donations at Park Spring Rd, Grimethorpe, Barnsley S72 7BN
We do ask that you refrain from leaving items outside the hub when we are closed as they are likely to get damaged and we are unable to sell them.

Every purchase you make at the Retail Hub isn’t just about supporting Barnsley Hospice, we also champion shopping sustainably and adding more pre-loved outfits to your wardrobe. We get some fabulous rare and vintage finds in our donations, so you can look stylish whilst doing your bit for the planet!
What does the Retail Hub sell?
As well as being able to donate your items, we have a fantastic range of goods on sale where every purchase you make helps people in our area living with a life-limiting illness. We sell a range of fashionwear, homeware, good quality furniture including sofas and wardrobes, kids toys and vintage clothing in our specially-curated ‘Rotation’ area. Come along and find yourself a gem!
