Hospice Abseil raises over £15,000

Almost 60 fearless fundraisers completed a 100-foot abseil from the top of Barnsley College on Saturday May 17, in support of Barnsley Hospice and the specialist care it provides.

Those who visited town on Saturday may have spotted a sea of orange on the side of the iconic Barnsley red building. Participants enjoyed stunning views of the borough along their adrenaline-filled descend, all while making a difference to local families when they need it most. Over £15,000 has been raised from the event so far, with donations and sponsorship still coming in.

Hannah Clarkson, Challenge Events Manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Anyone familiar with the college building can understand that this abseil was no mean feat, and we’re so grateful to everyone who signed up and got involved!”

“This was a new event for the hospice calendar and what a day it was, with so many people coming out to watch and cheer on loved ones.”

“While there may have been some nerves on the way up, there was plenty of laughter on the way down. We’re so proud that all our fundraisers completed their abseil and helped make a difference to the hospice.”

The event was made possible thanks to the generosity of several local businesses, including those who sponsored the event, Ardagh Group, Rapid Response Telecoms and Barnsley Brickwork, as well as Barnsley College for hosting this exciting event. The team from JP Scaffolding kindly supported in the planning and building of the scaffolding on top of the college which allowed the abseil to happen.

Kelly Rinaldi, Principal of Barnsley Sixth Form College, said: “Taking part in the abseil was humbling, exciting and a little bit terrifying. Standing 100 feet above the town, I felt incredibly proud to be part of such a meaningful event. It was a real privilege to support Barnsley Hospice in this way, and to see our college building used as a platform – quite literally – for such an important cause.”
