Happy Bags; raising money for charities

three women with collection box

Beverley Johnson who attends the Hospice Day Therapy Unit Drop In Service is raising funds for Barnsley Hospice and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Making Happy Bags is Beverley’s fantastic way of raising money for the two charities. She makes little organza bags which are very sweet and each contains a Marble, a Piece of String, a Heart, a Teddy Bear, an Eraser, a Coin and a Four Leaf Clover.

Beverley said “I have just started to make my happy bags in the Limes Day Therapy Unit of the Hospice. In this way we can make more bags with the help of patients and volunteers. It is also a nice group activity for those who attend the Limes Drop in Service. The items of each bag need to be sorted and put in the bag. There is a special meaning behind each item;  a Marble for those days when you have lost yours, a Piece of String to hold it together when everything seems to be falling apart, a Heart to remind you that somebody loves you, a Teddy Bear for a nice hug when you need one,  an Eraser to make those little mistakes go away, a Coin so you’re never completely broke and a Four Leaf Clover to bring you all the luck in the world. Barnsley Hospice is an amazing place with friendly staff and volunteers and I am determined to raise as much as money as I can with the help of others  for this great cause.”

The bags are available for a £2 donation per bag and available to pick up from the Hospice reception. The money will be split equally between Barnsley Hospice and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

The Barnsley Hospice Day Therapy Drop In service is for patients and their carers, who have been touched by cancer or a life limiting progressive illness including; heart failure, motor neurone disease and chronic respiratory disease.

The drop in service provides a chance for patients over the age of 18 and  their carers and family to share experiences and gain support from others who are living with the effects of cancer or a life limiting illness. It provides specialist compassionate care when patients and their families need it most, helping with the physical, psychological, spiritual and social effects of their life limiting illness.

The Drop In Service at Barnsley Hospice is available on Wednesdays from 10am until 3pm and is open for people to call in anytime between those hours and no formal referral is required to attend.
