Gifts in wills

Could you support Barnsley Hospice with a gift in your Will?

The gifts we receive in Wills help us to maintain the quality of care we provide for patients and their families. These donations are very important to us and enable us to sustain and improve the services we provide for the people of Barnsley.

Any gift, large or small, makes a difference. Whether people give £50 or £50,000 or a percentage of their estate, we promise to use each gift carefully so that it has the greatest impact on our care and support for future patients and their loved ones.

How to leave a gift to our charity in your Will

If you choose to support Barnsley Hospice in your Will, the following details can assist your solicitor:

Barnsley Hospice
104 – 106 Church Street, Gawber, Barnsley, S75 2RL
Registered charity number 700586

If you already have a Will in place but wish Barnsley Hospice to benefit in some way; this can easily be added with a codicil – this is a way of making a change or addition to your existing Will without having to redraft the Will completely. Your solicitor can advise on this.

There are a number of ways you might decide to support the hospice:

  • A gift of money, you can leave a specific amount to us which is known as a ‘pecuniary gift.
  • A share of your estate, this is a gift of what is left of your estate (or part of) after all debts, taxes, costs and other bequests. It can be a percentage or fraction and is known as a ‘residuary gift’.
  • A gift of a particular item, eg. jewellery, a painting or antique, known as a ‘specific gift’.

Just tell your solicitor what you would like to do and they will ensure your wishes stated using the correct legal wording.

Did you know that leaving a gift in your Will can reduce the amount of tax payable on your estate? Under Inheritance Tax rules, if your net estate is worth more than £325,000 it will be liable to 40 % inheritance tax. Gifts to charities are exempt, so if you do leave a charitable gift it will be deducted from your estate before any tax liability is calculated. Also, if you leave a gift of 10% or more of the net value of your estate to a qualifying charity, the rate of Inheritance Tax is reduced from 40% to 36%. For more information, please speak to your solicitor.

Legacy Tree

In April 2022, we unveiled our beautiful Legacy Tree, designed to remember those who have left a gift to the hospice in their Will and recognise the importance of their contribution. Each carefully crafted leaf contains the names of individuals who have supported the care that the hospice provides by leaving a gift in their Will. Both previous and future supporters will be added to the tree incrementally.

For more information about our Legacy Tree, please contact fundraising@barnsley-hospice.org

Please note, each February, we also hold our Make a Will Month in which a number of local solicitors donate their time free of charge to help you draw up a Will and ask you to make a donation to the hospice instead of their fee. Please look out for details.
