What is Make a Will Month?

At the hospice, we recognise the importance of making your wishes known and making a Will can be a helpful way to do this.

Our Make a Will Month gives you the opportunity to get a simple Will written or updated by a participating solicitor free of charge throughout April.

Sharon’s story

Sharon created a Will during last year’s Make a Will Month. Here’s what she said.: “Once my Will was written, I felt relieved and satisfied that I had made my wishes known and that my grown-up children and any future grandchildren would be safe and secure if anything happened to us. I would encourage anyone to get involved in Make a Will Month. It’s an opportunity to help yourself and those around you and support a charity close to your heart.”

Do I have to leave a gift to Barnsley Hospice in my Will?

If you get a Will written or updated as part of Make a Will Month, there is no obligation to leave a gift to the hospice in your Will, but we hope this is something you’ll consider to help us fund our vital services for local people.

There are different types of gifts you may choose to leave in your Will, but here are two of the most common.

Leaving a specific amount of money

After taking care of your loved ones, you may choose to leave a cash gift, which is a fixed sum of money. You may also see this referred to as a pecuniary gift.

Leaving a % of your estate

Another type of gift is a residuary gift, which is a share of your estate. For example, once you have taken care of those close to you, you may choose to leave 5% of your remaining estate to Barnsley Hospice.

How do I get involved?

Getting involved couldn’t be easier. Simply choose one of the participating Solicitors and book your appointment directly with them. Remember, your appointment must take place in April. Your chosen solicitor will let you know what you need to bring to the appointment and anything else you need to consider beforehand.

What happens if my Will is not simple?

Your solicitor will let you know if your Will is deemed complex, and in this instance, a fee for any additional work will be discussed with you in advance. You can then decide whether you want to go ahead with the process.
